I was basically indifferent to Fred in previous incarnations but Velma was so insufferable I started having sympathy for him.
The series ended with her character literally being murdered by Scrappy Doo.
Even that part was presented as a super dramatic "cool" death attempt, sort of like what Tom Sawyer wanted for himself when he faked his own death and snuck in to watch his own funeral.
