"I'm a leftist in theory, but I buy the right wing anticommunist myths surrounding every socialist project ever to exist, and I believe that the best form of democracy so far that existed is the US model"

If they’re American I just assume they mean they vote for democrats but in a way that they think somehow makes them look cooler, like with a Bernie birdie pin or something. I think that’s about as deep as their political tendencies run.

Social Imperialists who wanna slacken the yoke on workers in the Imperial core but are in lock step with the Empire abroad. The left wing of fascism.

Ordinary people who support and vote for these people just need to be pushed left and grow out of it. The 'intellectuals' are just doing the work of the state department.

The last person I met who called himself a democratic socialist was a soldier in Iraq and had also occupied Hawai'i and south Korea. agony-soviet

In latin america that usually just means a more left-wing socdem with a bit more radical ideas like Evo Morales and Rafael Correa. The only openly democratic socialist state that I know is Honduras, they have been removing all neoliberal reforms from their country and pushing into their own version Democratic Socialism.

Well-meaning liberal who doesn't actually know what socialism means, but is likely steadily being radicalized.

Liberal who has read nothing whatsoever regarding international relations. Second thought: ask some probing questions to see if somebody is hiding their power level. Thought after hearing their response: why did I even try to be charitable.

They probably don't know what it means and are a succdem. If it wasn't already a useless term, Americans really put the nail in its coffin.
