They act like their treat experience would be diminished somehow by the knowledge that someone, somewhere enjoyed the same treat without as much suffering
True. The part that gets me the most is that what they do offer as an acceptable-to-them form of easier difficulty mode is the game's stealth DRM, the co-op mode. Fromsoft has these s so twisted up that they are actively praising the DRM.
On the other hand, the in-setting explanation for trying and trying again and the consequent in-setting respawning and corpse runs also gives the game a reason not to offer a robust save system. (which to me involves an unlimited number of save slots, autosaves that are in addition to manual saves rather than overwriting them, and quicksave/quickload)
That is/ought issue of hardcore s seems potentially analogous to the Thermian argument.
That upcoming play-as-zelda game looks like it could be interesting with the central object copying mechanic but they'll probably fuck the story up somehow with this fixation on The Prophecy
A similar, more recent example might be Skyward Sword. It did a lot of things differently and was widely disliked, but I suspect Nintendo learned the wrong lesson again and thinks people disliked it for the story, not for the stick waggling. Disclaimer: I don't really know what exactly it did with the story because I found the stick waggling gameplay unplayable.
They haven't made an F-Zero since 2004 because they just can't think of a way to innovate it but they keep pumping out Mario Karts.
BOTW is the one and only game I don't mind weapon breaking in simply because it constantly showers you with all types of weapons but I can definitely understand how other people could still dislike that in it.

I'm waiting on playing TOTK until the Linkle mod for it is done so I can install it on my hacked switch.
Nintendo's approach to its sacred franchises is a narrative dead end.

:skinner-kids-who-are-wrong:
Was the CD-i a stupid piece of shit?
No, Zelda just needs to be in peril.

They seem very resistant to ever admitting their gimmicks were bad and to making story more than an afterthought.
