He'd become more powerful, too. Doing something like this would create an army of loyalists who would vote for him if he ran for office or would defend his products. Bill Gates has completely laundered his reputation by not even ending illnesses, but simply providing some people with vaccines. Doing something as radical as ending homelessness in the US would give Elon complete impunity to do whatever ghoulish shit he could come up with.
Or look at W. Bush who was nice to Michelle Obama and all is forgiven.
