    Voodoo was practiced by many slaves, especially in Jamaica and Haiti. Escaped slaves from the Caribbean would make their way to the American south, bringing their religion with them. White christians saw voodoo as a threat to the white power structure, so they deliberately made stuff up to demonize voodoo practitioners. This allowed them to control the narrative, such as slaves should be kind to their masters.

    People who aren't part of the religion often have negative stereotypes about voodoo and its adherents. Even today, it carries a lot of negative connotations. White Christians often consider it a form of witchcraft or devil worship.
