I contend that early on before got particularly scratched, there were plenty of (and I lived near so many of them) wanted a performative gesture of their own "progressiveness," like what they already did by shopping at Whole Foods, and they wanted to (direct quote from offline person here) "save the planet and look cool while doing it."
I don't think it was ever about protecting the environment with the electric cars, more about owning the libs via king bazinga's racism.
