people are in this very thread saying that AI is "stealing" art. I fundamentally think that this reinforces the idea of IP
In the current economic system you're saying that artists trying to get paid for making art should effectively cease to exist.
I mean I don't mind artists setting up patreons or doing commission, but I also don't really care if something they post publicly gets "stolen"
Nah this is lib shit.
I just noticed that you're arguing with a 4 day old account that name-dropped me in the title of one of his own threads.
man never thought I'd have the honor to be randomly attacked for no reason because you got into an argument with me, I was unaware there was a rule against deleting your accounts and making new ones every so often to make yourself harder to doxx. I namedropped you because we literally talked about AI the night prior and i thought you would find it funny
It takes one click to notice that an account name I haven't seen before, one posting quite a bit and name-dropping me in their own thread titles, is 4 days old. Bad faith posters and alt accounts of previously banned people are a thing, and I think you already know that.
If you aren't either of those in intent, cool off, take a little walk, and come back and bring the funny or whatever.
I'm not particularly mad. I genuinely think you're a great poster, but like I've generally been friendly in my interactions with you and kept my tone polite while arguing and then I get accused of being in bad faith which is annoying. ig namedropping you was too familiar but I just thought you would remember the comments from last night and think the post was funny
I reserve the right to be cautious when I'm getting a lot of escalating interaction from a 4 day old account that apparently already knew enough about me and what I'm about to make me a topic of a thread post.
Good. Carry on then.
i apologize you weren't meant to be the subject of the thread I should have just pinged you but i thought that might be annoying. I edited the thread title
I get pinged all the time. It's usually fun.
i'll do that next time then
attacking IP is lib shit?
No attacking artists for trying to avoid having their work (labor) stolen is lib shit. I am not arguing with you because there is nothing to argue about with a liberal.
i wasnt particuarly vicious with my criticism but I'm certainly not going to try to force you to have an argument so have a nice day ig
Feel that way if you must, but I am explaining why a lot of people here aren't quite as bazinga for the treat printers when it comes to driving artists entirely out of the craft because of economic precarity, consequently leading to even more expansion of the bland and bleak brave new world of treat printers.
the vast majority of artists don't make money doing art and never will if they don't work at a company I don't understand this take. maybe it's because I'm so into fanfiction but like there will always be millions of people making more art than you know what to do with. I'm not saying you have to like the AI art, most of it really is quite shit which is a fine criticism that companies are blowing billions on shit art but like they do it either way, I think the best criticism of AI treat machines like you've said is how environmentally wasteful it is
Are you so certain of that?
You may be more correct there than you realize, especially regarding my first question there.
Yeah fanfiction is cool and good but there really are people, from paid-by-commission artists to graphic designers to writers under publisher contracts that are all affected by treat printers. Their material conditions have worsened and precarity has increased. "You got yours," so to speak, but that doesn't mean you speak for everyone else there. Losing a job sucks; that shouldn't be hard for you to understand.
pretty certain the majority of people doing art do not make a living off it yes. I'm not saying you can't have sympathy with someone losing their job because of AI but like complain about the owners like normal don't defend IP
Even if that were so (and that really depends on how wide your definitions are), does that invalidate the existence of everyone that does try to make a living with their art?
Ideologically absolute anti-IP stances with no considerations for ordinary artists that aren't IP-hoarding corporations aren't likely to win over those artists or the people that care about them. You complained about a relative lack of support for your positions here. I am explaining why that is so.
I'm not sure what you mean by "invalidate the existence", I understand their plight and I'm sorry the tech will end up causing a lot of poor people pain but I think again that any complaints on a communist website that defend IP should be pushed back on. My point is that such arguments are very short sighted, in trying to defend small artists in this way they entrench IP which will be forever more helpful to IP-hoarding corporations
Again. It isn't just about IP. As @Nakoichi@hexbear.net has already pointed out, people's labor has been stolen and continues to be stolen. If you can't accept that or acknowledge that, you're floating on a cloud of liberal privilege and it's up to you to come down from it.
I don't think this is accurate. stealing their labor would be as if I told someone I would pay them for their time to commission me a picture and then scammed them in some way, or if I literally stole a physical painting you were looking to sell, or if I was a business owner committing wage theft. like, do you actually think I'm stealing the artist's labor when I pirate something?
I totally agree. It’s frustrating that’s it’s so hard to have a conversation about this here.
it is but I don't think it's worth it to keep arguing so I'm just gonna let it go
more lib shit
hey if you don't want to argue how about you stop following the thread and being lazy like this
Again, you're ignoring the material reality of currently existing (and recently forcibly retired) artists who aren't "IP" hogs and whose economic precarity has worsened because of treat printers as they are being applied, now, in our current material reality. If you think the only meaningful way to steal art is to physically carry off a painting, I really don't have anything else to say to you.
I had a big paragraph typed up but I'm tired of the argument too so I'm gonna drop it here
I doubt it'd convince me, if it's just more of the same. Your ideological fundamentalism dismisses and outright ignores too many working class people and I doubt that a paragraph more of that would help.
you say in your other comment that people are defending IP hoarding by defending people on the small scale, but right here you do the exact same thing in reverse - using the morality of piracy on the large scale in order to win an argument grounded in the small scale
people are saying 'small artists that eke by are getting screwed out of compensation for their labour' and you're chiming in with 'why are you trying to stop me from pirating from Marvel?'
you're either purposefully being obtuse about this, or you genuinely are so focused on validating your own piracy that you're talking right past the conversation entirely
