This Dutch public broadcaster is admitting the Netherlands has been giving millions of euros to extremist Salafi-jihadist groups in Syria that the government recognizes as terrorists, including ex al-Qaeda ally Ahrar al-ShamMaterial support for terrorism https://t.co/WS2sxEAtYZ— Ben Norton (@BenjaminNorton) October 10, 2020
All active rebel groups in Syria (that aren't Turkish proxies) have some amount of Salafist influence. It was probably enticing to support a "peace" project within Syria that wasn't aligned with the Syrian government, but that's pretty much impossible. Even the celebrated White Helmets have a history of being a bit too friendly with terror orgs.
