Thought I’d wait a few weeks to see if it would sort itself out.
Same. Also because links don’t open in a new tab, going back most of the time will require logging in again.
Another thing that happens is that when going back does work and I stay logged in if I go back to the main feed, it is on the wrong page despite the url being correct (page 2, etc).

It’s probably going to page 2 correctly, but the content refreshes and therefore changes which posts are on which page.
You can long-press links and open in a new tab. That’s what I usually do. At some point, I’ll just use a generic Lemmy app like Memmy, but it’s not as nice for Hexbear specific content like the emojis.
Page 2 (or 3, 4, etc) actually shows page 1 posts so that when I tap Next it goes to page 3 and correctly shows page 3 posts. The quick solution is to tap Back or go to the homepage and kind of start over
In Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data, do you have a large amount of data for hexbear.net?
I routinely have GBs in there and have to clear it out. Just now it looked like this lol:

only ever briefly, resolving in seconds and not requiring another login. More of a graphical thing on my end it seems?
