IIRC advertising works to at least a small degree on most people, but most people also think they're immune to advertising.
Most ads aren't try to entice you to order the product or service within a minute of seeing it. They're just trying to stay in your popular consciousness so the people that do choose to buy that product have a sense of familiarity with it.
