At least in the gundam universe when mankind entered the universal century climate change hadn't wrecked earth yet so they could build the colonies. Good luck doing that on a planet rapidly dying/being gutted as we speak.
people will be born in space and live in giant floating cylinders that can accommodate up to a million people
