With no evidence except him being a weirdo?
That was weird.
Cancel culture is out of control.
Manson was the most hated person in America and the perfect scapegoat for it.
When he named his album Antichrist Superstar, he literally was the Antichrist to America. Both conservatives AND liberals fucking despised him. I think people forget or were too young to remember that liberals are who came up with the PMRC back in the 80s and 90s. The PMRC was the original cancel culture from their side, and there were both Republican and Democrat politicians across the country that pushed to ban him from touring in their states.
Manson used to wipe his ass with the flag, he burned American flags on stage, ripped up bibles and at the end of the day, he still wrote witty lyrics about American culture, capitalism and how fucked up our society was.
I highly recommend checking out his album Holy Wood that he wrote after Columbine and it was done before 9/11 yet predicted a lot of how our culture turned out after the event. Holy Wood has many songs that sum up American culture with individualism, religion, and conservatism. The song 'Fall of Adam' literally sounds like a Trump rally. Manson had a cross made out of guns and the whole 'Guns, God and Government' thing really narrows down how conservatives view the things. Even the song 'In the valley of the shadow of death' points out capitalism (sell each other shit) and how worthless we feel from being alienated in this system.
Manson was a genius at one time. Mechanical Animals had songs about social alienation, consumerist culture and the obsession with fame. It's a shame Columbine wrecked his career cause he could've evolved into a truly amazing artist, but after Holy Wood, he regressed back to shock factor and some really lazy lyrics (see Ka-Boom Ka Boom from TGOG - I like a big car, cause I'm a big star, I'll make a big rock and roll hit!).
Shame that he’s basically reactionary and a serial abuser of women and young girls, I hear his new album is pretty good.
I quit keeping up with him after High End of Low and that's when my music tastes began to shift towards other stuff like David Bowie, King Crimson, Cream and Hendrix.
No, never smoked weed before. Got involved in a band as a rhythm guitar player and had to expand my musical tastes to keep up with the bass player and other guitar player.
If you’re a musician, you might actually get some benefit out of using marijuana in moderation.
Man, remember when DOOM was considered the peek of video game violence? It seems almost wholesome in retrospect
I remember young me hating Jack Thompson and Lieberman and Clinton. I had honestly forgotten about Thompson for awhile too till semi-recently I watched a Hip Hop documentary series that had his dumbass pop up in Florida ofc.
There was a whole genre of blog posts in the early 2000s on the tropic of “I’m a mom, and yes, listen to Marilyn Manson!”
I should see if I can dig some of those up, might make for fun reading today.
I forget what podcast it was- I believe Pod Damn- where they had on a Q expert to talk about sex panics and I was pretty surprised this wasn't brought up.
The same people who thought Marilyn Manson was literally the devil now think that random Dems are.
There was the satanic panic over D&D and Heavy Metal music in the 80s as well, some people even got hauled into court over it.
For whatever reason there's just always been some non-zero percentage of the American population who are convinced that the devil is wandering around in broad daylight molesting kids and presumably challenging people to fiddle contests.
My instinct, if I had to pinpoint one cause, would be to blame suburbs, because historically in the US that's the domain of reactionary psychos who are just looking for problems.
I always loved that video of him on Bill O Rly's show just owning him.
And half my friends disappeared to sketchy bd schools
Yeah
Fun times
The really wanted me to know you Marilyn Manson was at a young age.
I mean, he’s probably gonna get Cancelled for other stuff eventually. Also he’s sorta cancelled himself by letting himself go to shit.
We covered it (and the Michael Moore documentary Bowling for Columbine) in Media Studies class and our teachers were pretty chill about it - it was a useful learning experience about mass media hysteria, moral panics and yellow journalism
