The reality is actually probably more depressing in that it's likely being done to protect it from vandalism.

    Yeah, it is to protect them from vandalism. They did the same thing in the UK with Churchill statues. Personally I think they should keep them like that and then invite a bunch of 4Channers to cum in it but that's probably why I don't hold public office.
