not a kiwi, but from what i've read, ardern has done a ok job handling covid and the economic fallout and is expected to win the upcoming election. She's fine for a succdem (who interned for blair, no less), certainly better than the ghouls in charge of the other anglos. However, new zealand's other major party, the nationals, have become rather trumpified. Their leader, Judith Collins, has taken to pandering to the evangelicals and basically scaremongering them into voting for her by lying about Ardern's positions, stating that she would legalize all drugs (there's a ballot on election day that is only about legalizing marijuana), legalize full-term abortion and other nonsense. That hasnt improved their polling, tho the poisoning of discourse is still a worrying development. More here: https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2020/10/11/new-zealand-elections-4/

Hwicce. I don't know anything about it, but its name looks really cool.

The Dominic Cummings scandal (well, the biggest one) is genuinely pretty funny though. Just to recap:

    • he is Johnson's top advisor and got himself inserted on the government's independent committee of experts who advise on Covid, despite being neither independent or an expert

    • the committee recommended strict lockdown measures forbidding non-essential travel and mandating that people with Covid symptoms stay at home, the government implemented them, then he promptly broke them by travelling across the country to his second home adjacent to his elderly parents' home, with his wife who had Covid symptoms

    • in a failed attempt to cover this up, his wife wrote a newspaper article about how she had Covid and was isolating herself in London despite being in Durham at the time

    • in a failed attempt to change the narrative, Cummings edited an old blog post to make it appear that he saw the pandemic coming and tried to warn everyone about it in early 2019, but didn't even remove the metadata showing when it had been edited, let alone scrub old versions of the page from the internet

    • in another failed attempt to change the narrative, he held a disastrous press conference in which he made bizarre excuses for his actions, including saying that he had to go for a drive to check his eyes were working, and also for no apparent reason he spoke in excruciating detail about a visit to a public toilet

    • it turns out that he had built the second home illegally without planning permission, and has been evading tax on it for nearly 20 years, and the government has miraculously decided that he doesn't have to pay any of it back
