he's such an asshole lol I have no clue why Ruud is letting him be an admin

Like, he's so resistant to the idea that what he's doing is unpopular among his userbase and refuses to cede any sort of ground, I'm quite certain that .World receives enough in donations to set up their own server and bridge so they can have both a matrix and a discord. They've felt comfortable enough to deploy a ton of different lemmy frontends, ask for probably 100K worth of free sysadmin labor annually, etc. (which is all totally fine btw!), but suddenly setting up shit for Matrix would be too much work?

they're such cowards lol, I promise they would be able to raise an absolutely eye boggling amount of money for legal defense if a company tried to sue them, it would honestly be great advertising for them because it would make the news I would think

The highest set tier on Mailgun is EUR 82 (for 100,000 outgoing emails per month!!!), and from the highest Netdata tier pricing, they must have around 38 nodes (machines), although you can get around the total number of nodes by just passing metrics into a single parent node. I only selfhost things on a small scale (including a Netdata agent, Lemmy, as well as a bunch of other stuff), but that's honestly a bit excessive even if they're the biggest instance. You don't even have to pay Netdata a single $ to be able to use it for a large scale server as well.

GitHub and Discord are widely considered the best options in their field.

I don't think a chud like this won't even need to know the history, they will get some sense beaten into them when they do things that actually matter and then will they realize the mainstream proprietary crap they think are the "best" in their field are actually not. They're also comparing product promotion to actual software usability, which doesn't make any sense. What kind of metrics are they even using to judge Discord and Github?? Just because a lot of people use it doesn't mean a software is good (feature-trapping, for instance). Both are bloated and slow as shit.
