I've had a few friends locked up, they said it was mostly just boring. Its not like those MSNBC shows where you get SA'd at the door. The other inmates are essentially your neighbors for years, its in everyone's best interest to be somewhat chill.
i paid the remaining restitution of a guy in jail so he could get out 2 weeks earlier.. never heard from him again but his nephew felt tremendous guilt about sexing my girlfriend after what I did for his uncle and told me

I got cheered on by my inmates when I got out and encouraged me to get my life together.

Because they probably have a lot more negative experiences with debt than even the average american does.
They don't understand how problematic he is and they haven't done self-crit.
