All the theories seem so bad. Anyone have any thoughts?
How did you even hear about this?
This would be the basis for a good SCP (if it isn’t already)
lol I have no idea. I was drunk last night and when I woke up the tab was open. The article I had up on my laptop was from the mobile version of Wikipedia, so I clicked on it somewhere (rather than searched for it)
I thought it have been the conspiracy iceberg, but rather than check I just figured that was wrong. I went down a lot of rabbitholes from that post, but can't get any resolution on what The Math Vaults of Trinidad are
Around ~1000 AD (where the wiki article claims first evidence of these guys shows up) would have happened during the Moorish period, and the Moors were keen on separating the muslim population based on ethnicity, when they came to Andalus, religion etc. I could see Cagots being a category leftover from the rise of Moorish Iberia. Perhaps a specific cub-culture of reformed visigothic christian extremists or something?
Alternatively, similar situation but during reconquista; perhaps they were a group of moorish christian converts? While the Muslims of Iberia had https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhimmi as protections for non-muslim residents, after reconquista christians wouldn't have offered the same opportunity to the pagans so "all of a sudden" you'd have a minority group pop up and get persecuted.
this isn't a bad theory, but it's hard to square it with the geography. The Cagots were primarily in Navarre, the Basque Country, and Aragon, as well as Aquitaine, Gascony, and Brittany, but seemingly absent from Andalusia. The article also brings up the possibility they were Vikings or Arabs, but it's just generally hard to square the fact they have no unique language and somehow live in a region/themselves spoke at least four languages from three different families, depending on region. In order for it to be an ethnic migration, you'd expect at least some Cagots somewhere to have preserved a language or dialect, like the Roma or the Irish Travelers do.

Right, additionally I don't even know who would be able to invade the area and leave a population demo there but not make it into any history books over it.
Also my original comment was gonna be "They're gypsies, CMV" before I started to work on something more serious.
I do think most likely explanation is they received some kind of social protections (perhaps they were a kind of indirect social protection) while the Moors were in power that were no longer available after Reconquista; this stance subject to change as I look into it further.
