I long finished school before Chromebooks became the standard but I think there's something about them needing to go into the right slot in thr charging cabinet. I've just seen memes like this and realised it must be a thing at school now
I figured you just have graduated pre-pandemic. A large number of schools now have enough devices to check out one to each student instead of having mobile carts. In Texas, mobile carts are now generally stocked for testing season so that functioning devices can be more assured—otherwise, the standard in districts that aren't struggling to stay afloat is about 1 device per student.
Guessing it's so IT or whoever can find them easily. If they're looking for laptop 23 but slot 23 is empty, now they have to go look at every laptop to find it.
