As a former public school tech worker, go fuck yourself. But as a fellow human who enjoys a good prank, I appreciate the attempt but try harder next time. Jam two Chromebooks in the same slot to watch our faces really melt. Or, get all of your friends to log into your Chromebook and log back off to fuck up any lazy tech's lazy inventory shortcuts; it generally won't be against AUP if they do it under your supervision because no one planned on a student doing something so stupidly malicious.

I'll need to keep these tips in mind for when my unfortunately not theoretical kids are old enough for school

I long finished school before Chromebooks became the standard but I think there's something about them needing to go into the right slot in thr charging cabinet. I've just seen memes like this and realised it must be a thing at school now

I figured you just have graduated pre-pandemic. A large number of schools now have enough devices to check out one to each student instead of having mobile carts. In Texas, mobile carts are now generally stocked for testing season so that functioning devices can be more assured—otherwise, the standard in districts that aren't struggling to stay afloat is about 1 device per student.

Guessing it's so IT or whoever can find them easily. If they're looking for laptop 23 but slot 23 is empty, now they have to go look at every laptop to find it.
