I can't find any example of this. I'm thinking of like, a city besieged on land and on sea, and the defenders of the besieged city sending out an early attack against the naval blockade surrounding the city. Is there anything like that?

So Sorties are a thing on land because the attackers need some time to set up their defenses and build siege weapons and they're vulnerable during that time, but I don't think there's anything analogous on the sea.

Idk about specifically as support to the land based part of a siege, but breaking through blockades was a pretty common occurrence. And sometimes it was done specifically to attack the blockading navy and then return to the besieged port without escaping, usually to reduce the effectiveness of the blockade so that incoming support or supplies had a better chance of making it into port

Sounds like it would possibly happen in the context of breaking through a blockade as possibly a distraction elsewhere on the line

Would the term "sortie" still apply? Maybe skirmish would also be correct.

All it is, is a short duration attack to probe or disrupt a seiging force, right?
