When I was little loved these cartoons but always thought the artstyle was a little ugly.

Now as an adult all media looks made to be as pretty as possible, so I appreciate this artstyle more and more. It was sort of a rebellion against the rules of art school. lumpy, unsymmetrical, full of lines and hard to animate I'm sure. I'm surprised that it ever became mainstream, but I'm glad it did.

The November 1994 issue of Parenting magazine listed Aaahh!!! Real Monsters as #1 in its top ten list of the worst new shows of the television season, describing it as "Graphic and scatological; it's just plain gross."[23]

Can't keep a good show down.

Yeah the stuff I watch with my niblings is just so clinical and clean. There's no silliness or grime or fun for its own sake. It's borderline 'back in my day' buuut I think there's value in having tv that's not didactic or moral, as a kid I found as much joy in the animation, colour and movement as I did the 'plot' and I think that's missing from shows like octonauts or hey duggee or whatever it was we were watching this morning

I've been watching Invader Zim for the first time and I've been appreciating how gross and offputting it is, really one of those shows that would never get made today

I don't know how Nickelodeon looked at Jhonen Vasquez's work and decided to give him a kid's show.
