This is in response to “human nature is only selfish under a system that rewards being selfish, like capitalism”
i hate the way people that think like that always paint you as being naive for disagreeing with them.
also, what a sad way to live.
Real Randian "Spoiling my husband is selfish cos it makes me feel good" vibes here.
Only predators are selfish, and healthy societies cull their predators.
My roommate is like this, keeps saying shit like "Human beings are naturally conservative, and only watch out for those in their circle." As if we don't exist in sprawling, interlacing webs of dependency from the day we're born. I'm like, the entire human species is your circle motherfucker, drop this my tribe, their tribe shit. I"ll say it again: People who make these sweeping cynical statements about human nature are just projecting what's inside them.
This was also Freud's take during WW1 on why everyone he knew suddenly became hatemongering arseholes.
He came to the conclusion that the majority of people weren't inherently selfish or altruistic, they were inherently conformist, and if you managed to change what people thought/felt was the dominant ideology that majority would conform. Freud had a lot of shit takes, but I don't think he was entirely wrong on that one.
Also, a really common depression brain thing is thinking you're not really a good person, you just do things that appear good to make yourself feel good/trick other people into liking you/thinking you're a good person.
I wouldn't necessarily dismiss this take out of hand, and it's definitely worth checking up on anyone making it to see if they could use some help.
