It's the job of the politician to get people to care about stuff though. What even is your point? That politicians should only chase what the average person cares about? And what they care about is determined by who they vote for? If they only vote for what they know and only know what they vote for, how is any ground gained? The average person didn't care about civil rights either. Or gay marriage. If we went by what people voted for and only cared about that, those things would have never went anywhere.
