It's incredibly frustrating to know that a genuine leftist movement is being stifled by these people who are de facto leaders by the status of being a journalist. If there was a single leftist media personality in Britain that acted with the passion and drive of any one of the right-wing American nut-job commentators we'd have a proper fight on our hands
They pull punches. They act too kind. They make small petty jibes and claim them as victorys, never compelling ideological or rhetorical arguments. It's a load of fuck.
I've written a few thoughts on this that I intend to try and form it in to a petition or letter of sorts but I'm no writer.
A weakness in the left-wing media, that goes against our own values, is to act too much like conventional media. It only serves to further the alienation between news givers and news takers. With the supposed truth that's communicated between them being held up on the same faith that underscores capitalist imperialist propaganda. The faith that the truth is being said and the truth is being heard.
When in light and examination this is unlikely to be true on either side. This is a relationship maintained on delusion.
We've come to identify a tone, a language and a disposition in the style of writing (and video). We've become desensitized too it as it's clear to everyone it only serves to reinforce psychological biases or to elicit a reaction. The skill of the writer is only a vessel to legitimise their superiority and right to speak over others but the writers has no more or less right to speak than anyone else. This is something you need to learn accept.
Journalists conform to this tone and the public demand their conformity to it, Because of this we're conditioned to approach information in a way that discards all substance and context.
Our media could be improved to operate on volunteerism and organize by tapping in to the energy of our social media efforts, to deliver it in a way that creates a positive social relationship (socialism) and not just another branch of consumerism (capitalism).
You are in a rare and privileged position to give a platform to those who's passion isn't curtailed by careerism, image and a stringent adherence to establishment legitimacy. The same people willing to speak in fire and righteous passion to expose the pain, the suffering, the sadness and the misery of the masses under an oppressive system of capitalism.
In an age of Youtubers with million upon millions of views a week, Tik Tok videos and Instagram influences nobody has been able to tap into this energy in a way that is yet productive, and it's unbelievable that you aren't able to see the potential of what is right in front of you.
Abandon your status, the prestige and esteem of journalism is dead. It's time to hand it over to the people.
Okay maybe that was a bit all over the place and probably isn't clear enough in what i'm actually demanding. But essentially journalists could be considered labour organizers and use their skill and talent to lend a stronger voice to the people. A greater legitimacy will come from many voices. Instead of just speaking on our behalf they could be empowering us to speak for our selves.
But I have no faith in these people to deliver anything productive. Thus is the nature of their work.
One of the things I've really seen take off in the US has been the rise of the "citizen journalist streamer". The problem is, it's extremely feast or famine, and most of them aren't well off.
That leads into a second problem - since journalism is not a remunerative job, only people whose family can afford to support them through internships and school become journalists. And their class interests remain their class interests.
