It's the same justification for everything, "I can't look soft on crime or terrorism, or appear too far left. Or else the right will call me a commie" And they just call him soft on crime and terrorism, and call him a commie anyway.

Preaching to the choir here, but it's just a show to justify imperialism. I don't think he actually did it for this reason. I am curious to know what makes him actually tick. I've seen people say he's acting to preserve his meager legacy as president and that's why he always seems to step in to stifle progressive movements, but I don't know if that's it.

Exactly. Dems are so scared of being called commies, it's why they come off so weak and cowardly compared to Republicans who just don't care about this.

Obama was heavily criticized in his presidency, especially in his second term for "looking weak" when it came to imperialism. Neoliberals to this day still criticize him for how he handled Syria when both they, and the neocons were yelling "boots on the ground". US imperialism has been in a decline for a while now, largely thanks to Obama's incompetence. Trump gets all the blame cause 70% of our media has a liberal bias and they didn't want to criticize their holy precious Blue Reagan whom they built a cult of personality around.
