Anyone watch it? Any good?
It’s really fun to watch John brown kill/mutilate slavers, but it has some shitty takes sometimes. They made Frederick Douglas kind of a creep. They make John Brown more of a nut case then I understood him to be from what I’ve read about him. I haven’t watched the whole season but that’s what I’ve got from it so far.
I mean it's not like overtly leftist or anything but I enjoyed watching it. I watched every episode the night they came out and it was pretty good. Ditto to everything necrocop said.
IMO Ethans Hawkes amazing acting smooths over most of the lib shit. I don't know that much in depth about alot of American History (except what gets covered on The Dollop), but from what I do know in the context of his visit to Ireland Frederick Douglas was kind of a dick.
I watched the whole show and I'm in the midst of reading Midnight Rising right now, which covers the same period of Brown's life. The general shape of things are still there, but at times it really feels like the show goes out of its way to downplay reasons to take Brown's crew seriously as historical figures. I still highly recommend it, because the world is seriously lacking John Brown fans and it's got great meme potential the left should be utilizing, but it shouldn't be given any weight as a historical piece.
Having said all that, as I get deeper into Midnight Rising and the events of Harper's Ferry, the more unhappy I am with Good Lord Bird. They seem to have changed a lot of important stuff around.
Worth the read if you want to check it out. Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid That Sparked the Civil War
