For me it was Andrew Bird (who I am currently on a binge of) and Fleet Foxes.
To a lesser extend, Radiohead and the Flaming Lips. Though I mostly just didn't care about them until I was older.

Gogol Bordello. I saw them as an opening act circa 2006 and it was just too overwhelming for me to take it all in. Now they're one of my favorite bands, and their album Trans-Continental Hustle is part of my regular rotation.
If you like them check out Idiot Flesh, or their newer project Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. A bit differant but same vibe imho
Sleepytime gorilla museum is googol bordellos newer act?
No not at all. It’s Idiot Flesh’s band after they broke up, minus a member or two. Sorry for the confusion
The main supporting character in Wristcutters being based on the lead singer of Gogol Bordello will never not crack me up.
Is that movie worth watching? I've never heard of it but it sounds interesting.
The real Eugene also played a supporting role in Everything Is Illuminated, and there's some Gogol Bordello music in the soundtrack.
Yes. Among my favorite movies to watch when I'm feeling down.
I did watch Everything is Illuminated. I don't actually remember if I liked it. It's been a while.
Everything is Illuminated is an OK movie, it's got its moments but I didn't really like the ending
spoiler
where the grandfather kills himself because of survivor guilt (?) and his family becomes observant Jews just because they're genetically Jewish
have you read the book? I haven't read or watched either in like 10 years, but i watched the movie shortly after reading it and i liked the book a lot more
the book was so good
No, but I'll put it on my list
