To a lesser extend, Radiohead and the Flaming Lips. Though I mostly just didn't care about them until I was older.

metal like iron maiden and metallica. all the people i knew in high school who listened to metal were either weird or the older guys dating/married to my friends' older sisters. i was more into punk and metalcore stuff, but after listening to street fight radio and hearing them talk about metal encouraged me to give it a try. now i love iron maiden and like a lot of metallica and similar bands like slayer and megadeth and all that
I will not listen to Metallica anymore, but Iron Maiden is fantastic, and Eddie is the best band mascot on the planet.

yeahhhhh metallica are terrible people, but they've made some good music and every once in a while I like to listen to a few of their songs. iron maiden is definitely my favorite, sometimes I'll just start at the beginning of their discography and listen through it for a day.

I'm having a hard time thinking of an example, but I've got one for the opposite situation. If you'd asked me a few years ago what I thought of the Dave Matthews Band, I would have said "too meh to bother with an opinion. I nothing them." But then I bought a used car from a dealer and got a couple months of free Sirius radio. So much of that is sports, but I found a few music stations that I liked. There was one that was playing 90s alternative rock, which was fun . . . until a Dave Matthews Band song and I AGGRESSIVELY PUNCHED the button, like 2 seconds in. Turns out I really hate that band, and I didn't realize it until I was suddenly confronted with their music after probably years of never really hearing anything from them. And it kinda made me laugh, because I'd still call them a very beige band, too middle of the road to bother having a passionate opinion of, and yet apparently I passionately hate them. IDK
Beyond Dave's weird voice, I can't stand their fiddle player's style. It sounds like ass to me after listening to mostly bluegrass for years.

Yeah, I guess I can always type out the shruggy guy. Makes me think of the time my mom tried to put it in our family text group but didn't quite get it right, so he looked all lopsided. One of my brothers copied it and used it for a long time. It was a pretty cute little inside joke.
Yeah that's a good inside joke, I almost always mess it up on here or somewhere else due to the formatting. My phone keyboard has a whole section for all the "classic" emotes, including shruggies. This 乁( . ര ʖ̯ ര . )ㄏ is another good one

I used to love DMB in high school, mostly because of their sax player, now I'm very 'meh' on them, but will listen to a few tracks for nostalgia purposes.
I knew I was supposed to like them in high school, because everybody else who shared my taste in music liked them, but I was in the "meh, I don't get it" camp. But that has grown to hatred in the intervening years somehow, lol.

Not a particular musician, but I thought I didn't like black metal for a long time. I realized recently that I actually do like black metal when the quality of the recording is decent. Idk why so many black metal bands like recording on shitty equipment.
Depending on your age, it could just be that black metal artists now have access to better equipment in a DIY setting.

this is it. any kid with an apple computer, pirated logic pro and a few simple plugins and some youtube videos can scratch track a recording and can clean up any unwanted sounds. Its quite awesome really

This is a pretty interesting mini-doc about DIY music making in the early 2000s in Ireland. Includes a couple of bands I really love like Enemies and Adebisi Shank.
I had a similar thing happen, but a bit different. I always liked melodic and symphonic black metal but I had a hard time appreciating the rougher production side of things. Now, I like it all. I see the low production as an added layer of distortion on top of the already distorted guitars. It can help the tremolo riff gain a "hum" that allows it to fill your whole ear. It's for not everyone, and I can totally understand why it turns people off, but it does add atmosphere.
Perhaps I should giver her another chance. Any recommendations in particular?

Her latest album, folklore, is a good entrypoint for someone who's into andrew bird, fleet foxes, and similar — half of it's produced by the national's Aaron Dessner, one of the best tracks on the album is a duet with justin vernon, and overall it's a lot more stripped back than some of her other recent work. Some tracks of note are the 1, cardigan, exile (ft. bon iver), seven, epiphany, and peace.
Another great choice is reputation, in particular if you're into concept albums. Sonically it's pretty opposite from folklore (which is very stripped back) — it's a lot darker and grittier than pretty much all of her other stuff and the theme of conflict between public persona vs private life is very interesting imo.
And like AlephNull said, 1989 is an absolute pop masterpiece, and has the highest bop density out of pretty much any album every produced.
Edit: also, I wouldn't recommend the full album as a starting point, but the song Cruel Summer off of Lover (cowritten with St. Vincent) might be her best, bar none.
I do like a good concept album. Among my favorites are the original Anais Mitchell Hadestown and the Deltron 3030 album.
Like a lot of americans I spent quite a while thinking that techno was some lame european party music (not realizing it'd been invented by black people in detroit). Then I heard some Underground Resistance, Drexciya, Terrence Dixon, Omar S and my head exploded.
Zoviet France, I always hated the name for some reason and maybe had them mixed up with some other group. Finally got around to listening to some of their 80s and early 90s stuff and like it a lot. Like some two-three hour long albums that really ride out.
Xenakis is another that I wrote off as being too academic or something but his shit clicked for me recently. Also he is a comrade who lost his eye as a freedom fighter.and was run out of greece for being a communist.

Gogol Bordello. I saw them as an opening act circa 2006 and it was just too overwhelming for me to take it all in. Now they're one of my favorite bands, and their album Trans-Continental Hustle is part of my regular rotation.
