For me it was Andrew Bird (who I am currently on a binge of) and Fleet Foxes.

To a lesser extend, Radiohead and the Flaming Lips. Though I mostly just didn't care about them until I was older.

    Like a lot of americans I spent quite a while thinking that techno was some lame european party music (not realizing it'd been invented by black people in detroit). Then I heard some Underground Resistance, Drexciya, Terrence Dixon, Omar S and my head exploded.

    Zoviet France, I always hated the name for some reason and maybe had them mixed up with some other group. Finally got around to listening to some of their 80s and early 90s stuff and like it a lot. Like some two-three hour long albums that really ride out.

    Xenakis is another that I wrote off as being too academic or something but his shit clicked for me recently. Also he is a comrade who lost his eye as a freedom fighter.and was run out of greece for being a communist.
