    I haven't lived with my mom for three years but she still filed me as a dependent last year so I didn't get a check. Shit fucking sucks.

        Yeah, it's been a decade since I dealt with this but you can only be claimed as a dependent if the person claiming you provided like 50% or more of your financial support for the year (you'll have to research the specifics). If they don't meet that qualification, then they're not entitled to claim you.

        If they did do that, then they are allowed and it's basically up to the two of you to sort out whether to do that or not. Usually the parent has higher income and thus higher taxes and therefore is likely to save more in taxes by claiming you than you will save in taxes by claiming yourself.

        But, again, if they didn't meet that threshold, then they shouldn't be claiming you at all, and if you file a 1040, you can amend those to claim yourself (NOTE: I am not saying that you should do this nor recommending any course of action).
