picture from china. china good. car bad. china have car. china do bad thing. china bad?
There's an episode, and I'm dating myself here, of Dark Wing Duck, where he travels back in time and discovers the reason the dinosaurs went extinct was because they did everything backwards. Car phones were just phones with long cords. Roads were inflated rubber and tires were made of concrete.
But, and here's my point, both rubber and concrete are stupid materials for wheels and vehicle support tracks. Rubber only last a couple of years and needs to be replaced all the time. Or you can get flats. A little bit of water and you hydroplane like an chump. Concrete? Freeze thaw cycle makes pot holes, shit covers the soil and blocks the rain from soaking into the ground, and even a third thing!
Metal on metal. That's where it's at. Shit last forever. Takes up way less space, rain can fall right to the ground. Even better, no tires at all, and using magnetics to levitate.
and I’m dating myself here
I spent like ten seconds trying to figure out if you were talking about some new kind of sexuality I wasn't yet aware of.
this is the future leftists want.
(actually it's the future capitalists want, where there are no social bonds, even diads.)
How did the dinosaurs power their cars if the dinosaurs hadn't been turned into oil yet :soviet-hmm:
Roads would inflated rubber and tires were made of concrete.
Holy crap. Memories suddenly rushing back. 😵
I know the right answer is "train" but the almost right answer is "scooters." Think about how much less congested it would all be if they were all on scooters.
Good places to live have infrastructure built for multi-modal transport. Things like bike/scooter infrastructure needs to be included in good transit.
I don't really like bike infrastructure just ban the cars, let people walk and bike freely in the streets and have a network of transit.
"Good" bike infrastructure is a very complex thing that allows cars + bikes to interact safely. It's expensive as shit, and it usually leaves little space for bikes, so you even get bike traffic which is absurd. Most bike infrastructure is bad, sometimes more dangerous than just riding roads/lanes. It's not a step to move away from cars, it's a solution that accommodates them, it's like the centrist solution. Even in places where there's good bike/transit/train networks, car usage keeps growing.
I mean yeah, I'd like no cars in my city, but when they put in bike lanes I'm still in favour. Some of the infrastructure here is actually pretty good; it's just patchy.
i wish i could just have a little go cart because i hate scooters and getting bugs all over me
somebody calculate the number of trains required to replace all these cars in this picture
Not a calculation but it shows just how inefficient c*rs are

It has "on one light rail train" in the gif, which would probably be a bit less compact on a more spacious train I guess.
One train going to other direction, and one to the other
C'mon, it's basically a train already! Just take out the redundant engines, hook 'em together and be done with it
hey broski did you ever end up doing that iceberg chart? no worries if you didn't :)
It's better than American urban planning, but yeah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much focus on roads.
