Your survival instincts go out the window when you have a helmet on because your brain thinks you're invincible now. Leads to lots of neck injuries that way and they don't prevent your brain from rattling around when you get clocked.
Everyone is much more cautious without helmets. The only reason they don't switch back is because the big hits are fan pleasers.

The biggest problem with football is how violent it is. Now no one dies on the field, but cte rates are incredibly high for anyone that plays. Helmets were a quick solution to prevent deaths, but the rules of the game need to be changed to prevent these terrible long term brain injuries.
I don't really know what the solution would be beyond massive changes to the contact rules.
