    You know what I love?

    Reddit stoics.

The most significant practitioners of the philosophy were Romans who understood that their way of life was ending, and so clung to a frankly insane belief system that exists to justify their continued existence in a world that was moving past them. It has no place in the modern world, it's notions of the soul and the very nature of the universe are almost entirely alien to anyone with even an elementary education based in modern empiricism. And yet, because there's some quotable lines about sucking up your feelings, a bunch of Reddit dudes have tried to coopt a dead philosophy because it reinforces their own misguided notions of masculinity.

Please note that I am talking out of my ass. While I'll stand by my statement that Stoicism doesn't have any place in the modern day, I've only read summaries of Stocism written by modern scholars, never any actual Stoics. I'm sure it was valid in its day.

Marcus Aurelius WOULD be fuming right now, but he had already visualized this happening and has emotionally prepared for and processed it.

Stocisim is related to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (the less fun CBT) which is not only touted as the gold standard for psychological treatment, but fits in perfectly with neoliberal subjectivity of "you must be mindful and resilient under late capitalist hellworld"

I used my works counseling support (cause it's free and I felt like it'd be a good step) and this is essentially what they pushed. She actually recited the AA prayer in my last one and I broke and kinda snapped at the councilor. Never went back. When I told her it wasn't working for me and I think it's actually making things worse, she implied I was uncomfortable with opening up with women and should use a male councilor...

I've been hearing all my therapist friends talk about DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) - so I think this might be changing? I'm not really familiar with either, though. I've avoided psychologists for my whole life.

(and yes, from my understanding, Marx is the inspiration)
