The US did and still does do this, but it's pretty much only the leftish and leftists that try to support them in their struggles. Did you not see us all trying to get Bernie to drop out back in October so Elizabeth Warren could win the primaries?
It just doesn't seem to make any headlines, and we mostly get your news. Native issues are a known thing here in general or at least known to be a thing to the apolitical and it's pretty central even to white radlibs. It's also led to massive liberalization of these struggles. I don't really even hear about natives in the states unless it's some Dances With Wolves Shit.
Our news rarely covers Native American struggles unless there's violence involving white people. But the big one this past decade was probably Standing Rock vs the Dakota Access Pipeline, not that there aren't plenty of other issues that need to be addressed; The violence I hear about from Natives having to deal with Border Guards just to get onto their reservations should be a regular news story.
Yeah I remember Standing Rock. That was pretty large news. It always seems like a weird criticism of Canada coming from Americans that way, cause at least here it's a mainstream issue.
Might depend on where in Canada as well. At least on the east coast whether good or bad, everyone definitely has an opinion. It's a mess, no doubt, but anecdotally people are at least vaguely aware. How left the average lib is also varies a decent amount by area. We have a province by province overton window because Our Elections Are Different.
So maybe it's cause I live in Canada, but didn't America also totally do this and it's just kind of not even talked about by American leftists?

Ah yeah, from down here it doesn't sound like one. When I talk to libby Canadians they tend to pretend that First Nation peoples don't exist.
