Title. Just looking for that. I don't mind anything else, they can do the most ridiculous fighting shonen bullshit with the inability to not escalate, just with real ideologies people would actually have

I've seen the whole series about three times now. It's extremely liberal and is tinged with a 'both sides' point of view. The ideologies present also aren't necessarily real, but rather, how a liberal would describe what liberalism is in contrast to an autocracy in the context of international warfare. Their ideologies often come down to personal attitudes of high ranking military officials, not any kind of mass movements. Of course, it's a show centered around large military conflicts and 95% of the characters are military officers, so it's to be expected. I remember a few popular uprisings happening in the show, but they're kind of glossed over or only happen to be part of a larger plot concerning a high ranking military official's story.
A surprisingly aware part of the show is that it seems to tacitly admit that liberal democracy has all the tools in place to appoint a fascist dictatorship into power if put under the correct amount of stress.
The only realistic ideology present are the Phezzani, who are just space capitalists and want money so they engage in war profiteering and manipulation of foreign governments to make more money. Also, the Phezzani get uncomfortably close to simply being an anti-semitic conspiracy theory.
Also y'all can lay into me if you want but the series is really goddamn good and some of the best writing I've ever seen in an anime. It's good and I like it a lot. I even like the more recent adaption. I like space stuff :(
Hi, I like space stuff too, have you seen Space Battleship Yamato 2199? Its a remake of a show from the 70's and its just wonderful, the first anime space opera to really hook me. I discovered it after being a little bit disappointed by the latest Expanse season and it made me enjoy it even more, the world building is really classy relying on indirect exposition, visual storytelling is ok and the soundtrack is just awesome, I love the battle theme in particular. I am near the end and was wondering if I should give LotGH another shot. I tried to watch it a couple of times but between the old animation and a slow start I moved on to other stuff. Or maybe its ok if I watch the remake, what do you think? I am looking for more sci fi besides everything that is well known.
I have seen the Yamato remake. It's alright. LoGH is slow but it gets going, don't worry. The animation in LoGH is beautiful so I don't know what to recommend there lol. It's incredibly intricate and the newer Blu-ray release is so clear that hand drawn details like cross hatching are visible. I like that kind of thing. The newer LoGH adaptation is alright, but it's like any other space show from now. The 80s OVA is and will always be on another level of production values for me.
Thank you for setting me straight on LoGH, I now carry a little bit of guilt because of my comment on the animation (I watched it on youtube, hangover). I'll try to get the newer Blu-ray release, sounds really good.
