Title. Just looking for that. I don't mind anything else, they can do the most ridiculous fighting shonen bullshit with the inability to not escalate, just with real ideologies people would actually have
How accurate is the series from a historical perspective?
In terms of events and their time and place, fairly accurate.
They kinda gloss over shit like Marx’s drinking problem, his constant drama with pretty much every other leftist of the time, the fact he nearly ran his family into total poverty. Also they make him a skinny kawaii boy when he was actually a shorty chubby hairy guy.
The original FMA is more drawn out with Scar and the other semi-related characters, isn't it?
They're rather different stories, though they do share many elements and the early plot
Brotherhood had such a hard time covering early points, the whole Hughes, "brother", and Lior arcs are smoothed over in favor of later, more story expansive arcs that leave kind of a hole between how the two stories end up. Personally, I prefer the more grisly 2003 version to Brotherhood.
Personally I loved the ending of 2003, as it felt more aligned the the theme of the show. Brotherhood has a fairly typical anime ending. I also prefer the way homonculus work in '03, and prefer Sloth and Wrath from '03 as well.
The movie is related to the anime though, right? The movie has a weird villian but I thought what was on the other side of the portal was an interesting idea (trying not to spoil).
spoiler
in what way? Because he wasn't seperated from Al? I found the tradegy of them both losing their world, but staying together really encapsulated the story. They never could recover from what happened. Kinda like Bilbo leaving Middle Earth or whatever
Weird. I couldn't get through even 30 episodes of Boruto after seeing what they did to the women. Temari, sister to the Kazekage, hero of the war, one of the most powerful in the world, is now a housewife to Naruto's secretary. I turned it off and never looked back. I couldn't do it
I was actually okay with Hinata being a housewife because that was actually her life goal the whole time, so it at least makes sense.
So ultimately sounds like Hunter X Hunter might be worth watching. I've been eyeing it. Thanks 😊
I haven't watched it, but I believe LotGH is supposed to be the gold standard in this outside of something like Mobile Suit Gundam. Someone yell at me if I'm wrong.
I've seen the whole series about three times now. It's extremely liberal and is tinged with a 'both sides' point of view. The ideologies present also aren't necessarily real, but rather, how a liberal would describe what liberalism is in contrast to an autocracy in the context of international warfare. Their ideologies often come down to personal attitudes of high ranking military officials, not any kind of mass movements. Of course, it's a show centered around large military conflicts and 95% of the characters are military officers, so it's to be expected. I remember a few popular uprisings happening in the show, but they're kind of glossed over or only happen to be part of a larger plot concerning a high ranking military official's story.
A surprisingly aware part of the show is that it seems to tacitly admit that liberal democracy has all the tools in place to appoint a fascist dictatorship into power if put under the correct amount of stress.
The only realistic ideology present are the Phezzani, who are just space capitalists and want money so they engage in war profiteering and manipulation of foreign governments to make more money. Also, the Phezzani get uncomfortably close to simply being an anti-semitic conspiracy theory.
Also y'all can lay into me if you want but the series is really goddamn good and some of the best writing I've ever seen in an anime. It's good and I like it a lot. I even like the more recent adaption. I like space stuff :(
Hi, I like space stuff too, have you seen Space Battleship Yamato 2199? Its a remake of a show from the 70's and its just wonderful, the first anime space opera to really hook me. I discovered it after being a little bit disappointed by the latest Expanse season and it made me enjoy it even more, the world building is really classy relying on indirect exposition, visual storytelling is ok and the soundtrack is just awesome, I love the battle theme in particular. I am near the end and was wondering if I should give LotGH another shot. I tried to watch it a couple of times but between the old animation and a slow start I moved on to other stuff. Or maybe its ok if I watch the remake, what do you think? I am looking for more sci fi besides everything that is well known.
I have seen the Yamato remake. It's alright. LoGH is slow but it gets going, don't worry. The animation in LoGH is beautiful so I don't know what to recommend there lol. It's incredibly intricate and the newer Blu-ray release is so clear that hand drawn details like cross hatching are visible. I like that kind of thing. The newer LoGH adaptation is alright, but it's like any other space show from now. The 80s OVA is and will always be on another level of production values for me.
Thank you for setting me straight on LoGH, I now carry a little bit of guilt because of my comment on the animation (I watched it on youtube, hangover). I'll try to get the newer Blu-ray release, sounds really good.
I've heard Boring Germans in Space is quite awesome, I'm just not ready to take notes on every character.
My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars is a great standalone that still looks good to this day. I was gonna say that "It has very little politics", but then I remembered that I last saw it on a cigarette burned couch 6 years ago, so don't quote me on that.
almost every choice made by a character is informed by their personal politics iirc
edit: and obviously don't watch the new anime, go straight to the old 110 ep OVA
I’ve personally always been surprised with how many communists there apparently are in Japan there doesn’t seem to be very many openly leftist Manga and Anime artists.
Communist have worked in other parts of Japanese media, there’s actually a lot of communist Japanese filmmakers. Night and Fog in Japan is a good film about student radicals if you’re interested. Surprised nobody has made an anime version of kt.
No surprise considering how the weeb market specifically targets the same audience fash do lol
I've never seen any anime with out-and-out ideologies, and very little media in general like that. Having said that, Akame Ga Kill is clearly a story of peoples overthrowing a massive fascist imperialist regime, and is pretty badass.
Oooh how do the rewatches work? I'm a terminal lurker so completely oblivious.
It's kind of like if the rewatch threads on /r/anime was populated by Communists. We're at episode 17 right now.
where can i find Planetes? Crunchyroll or do i gotta fly the black flag?
I mean, in the sense that the ideology is more coherent, not just evil guy who wants universal conquest vs. dude who loves friendship. Even if it's fascism vs neoliberalism or something stupid like that.
