This is something I don't talk about often, but I was a signature away from enlisting in the Coasties. I was in a bad situation, abusive family, no work, 2000 miles away from my closest friend. I was told I'd be able to choose my MoS and where I was deployed (both of those were lies). I wanted to get home to Chicago and I wanted a career path that wasn't working minimum wage jobs or working on an oil rig. Was told I could be trained to be an aircraft repair technician and be deployed to the Great Lakes region. Sounded real good. Get back close to home, get a job that pays well once I'm out, save up some scratch while I was in too, I knew better than to buy a mustang. As I was signing some paperwork the recruiter was talking about the next steps, they contradicted what he told me before, I pointed that out, he asked about my paperwork, I said it wasn't done, he tried to back up and change the story, I said thank you for your time, but I'm going to do something else and I left.
I was homeless after that. I made the right choice, but it wasn't easy, luckily I was able to get back to my home city after a lil while and couch surf with friends until I got onto my feet proper. That's when I learned about communism and anarchism, and I decided to stop by a DSA thing. A guy there helped me get a job. Wasn't a good job, paid like shit, but I was eventually able to stop couch surfing.
