I realize I'm in the tiny minority of sports fans, but this kind of shit really kills my enthusiasm for the sport. I used to really love hockey as a kid. I guess I was ok with the ads on the boards but when they started covering the ice in ads, I started following a lot less.

I was fine with the ads on the boards, or the ads on the ice. The sponsored messages announced in the arena were also fine. I didn't mind having regular stoppages of play every 6 minutes to go to commercial break. I liked seeing the arenas all named after banks. Renaming divisions is too far though.

It's insidious how much advertising wraps its tendrils around anything popular, but at this point I don't really mind them renaming divisions to generate a cash stream instead of trying to allow people into the arenas to watch games Ike the NFL. Watching hockey at the Olympics is wild though, and that's when you really realize how much you h advertising you're just used to.
