I suspect that the plan, in so much that there was one, was for Trump to have by now declared a coup and to rally the cops and any seditious troops together with them, rather than for capitol police to eventually kick them out and ever so slowly begin escalating to get them away from the building.
Now all their supposed allies in power have abandoned or turned on them, so in the short-term they'll probably go home defeated, but who knows how this manifests over the coming years.
They'll try shit on inauguration, but the Secret Service will shut them down hard. The Secret Service is far more professional than cops.
I mean they're obviously going to try again. The smart ones who aren't completely puddle-brained probably understand that they got further than they probably thought was possible and only 1 person died.
There will be no public inauguration, that much I am certain of
