A user mentioned that one of the first Ukrainian diaspora organizations in Canada was explicitly socialist. But they had to rebrand sometime after the Cold War or something like that. They’re also apparently trying to distance themselves from the neonazi diaspora which makes me very nervous because the Nazis have institutional and financial support.

A lot of the old communist party newspapers had papers written by and dedicated to specific ethnic diaspora communities in the United States. Jews had Yiddish papers, Hungarians in Hungarian, Germans had Deutsch papers, etc.

They all started to disappear as the diaspora died out and their descendants were culturally integrated.

Reading this and thinking about the fire bombing of the House of Trade Unions in Odessa by Right Sector neonazis in 2014.

      https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/ukrainian-rightists-burn-alive-39-at-odessa-union-building/

Women and children were reported to be among those burned alive after initial rounds of shots and Molotov cocktails were thrown into the building by the right wingers.

More can be read about this event here:

If a Canadian feels like it, they can use their library card to gain access to the Globe and Mail's newspaper archive via the library service to pull up the original article.

A similar thing happened with south Vietnamese military refugees in the US

They had a plan to invade Vietnam and retake it. When Vietnamese journalists and other refugees criticized the officers and generals for either defrauding supporters or simply saying it was tactically impractical, they were assassinated. I haven’t read it in a while, but I believe there was one centrist who wanted to make peace with the new government and he suffered the most gruesome killing.

The FBI knew about this and never bothered to do anything.

Thanks for reminding me of the skateboarding movie Gleaming the Cube from 1989, a great classic film, the antagonists are connected to Anticommunist groups from Vietnam and skating teenagers have to save the day, including Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen.

So are "anti-soviet" Ukrainians the Canadian version of "anti-castro" Cubans?

Damn, and that was AFTER Nazi Germany fell too. You can't even give the excuse that he was following orders, because his country was at war.
