it's really hard to imagine, but i wonder if this was more novel at the time. like, to me eyes, this is probably one of the cheapest and easiest jokes around - "i'm grumpy and i'm bad at life, isn't that relatable?" but i feel like if that kind of self-deprecation weren't the norm, and it hasn't always been, comics like garfield might feel a bit fresher
