Also between equipment and ice time it's the most expensive of the major sports to start playing as a kid.
And I think a lot of the enforcer/fighting stuff appeals pretty hard to the punitive justice crowd.
It fucking sucks too because hockey is arguably the biggest sport where the team is emphasized over the individual.
Yeah, a player like McDavid is easily one of the best in the league right now but he plays for the Oilers so all that talent doesnt matter, lol. I love hockey for the team based plays, but soccer is less chud-y and has a similar focus on the team as a whole - theres just no good Canadian or American league for it.
The median person that gets into playing hockey is a middle class or higher child of relative privelidge who were in locker rooms with a bunch of sexist, racist pigs since they were little kids in peewee leagues (like 6 year olds or so). Its also so, so white. Like basketball at least has poc fans and players so all the racists either modulate those views or just arent into it.
