Similarly, but more physically, ants leave pheromone trails to help the colony converge to the shortest paths to food sources.

This is actually the main command structure for ants and termites. They do not need anybody to tell them what to do, they just leave chemical notes like that and every worker can figure out independently what to do from the combination of that marker and the context. This is known as stigmergy ("work by signs").
