    yeah, that stood out to me. i guess a key tactic of an effective national forgetting is to pretend it all stopped and invent some massive amount of time to have passed.

    • it never happened.
    • no one knows what happened.
    • it didn't happen like historians are saying.
    • it happened, but wasn't all that bad.
    • it happened, but we stopped several generations ago.
    • it happened, but we stopped stopped before anyone alive was born.
    • it happened under The Other Guy's administration, but My Guy shut it down.
    • it's still happening, but it's good for them to be forced into progressing into becoming like us.
    • it's still happening, but it's crucial for national security.
    • it's still happening, but it's necessary for us to have the treats we like.

      Anyone got any book recommendations on political amnesia like that? It comes up in passing in other books, but I'm yet to read one about it overall.
