I think the difference would be between systemic oppression and genocide. The Chinese practices with Uighurs are sketchy at best but to be committing genocide and having a member of the group you are genociding be a very popular star seems far-fetched. It does not seem far fetched to have a member of a group of people you oppress be a pop-star though.
