The problem is that I am a human being, and cannot fathom the thought process of a creature that so clearly isn't.

Afaik he still has retained a position of considerable power:

Long-time Amazon executive Andy Jassy will be the new CEO, but Bezos will be the company’s executive chairman — corporatespeak for board leaders who, unlike most, stay involved in key operational decisions.

For all we know, they could be about to go all in on Pinkertons and Blackwater types to shut down the unionization movement, and he wants to pin it on this Jassy person, that's my guess

He himself said he wants to take a break. I think he's just a lazy fucker that doesn't want to sit in meetings hearing the different ways to stop unionisation over and over again

I think his not doing anything useful and hoarding capital was getting in the way of what he really wanted to do which is to do nothing useful, hoard capital, and hunt people for sport.

Probably so when Amazon starts ramping up the capitalism he can escape some of the direct scrutiny and look like the "good billionaire"

Whats the point in stealing the wealth of an entire country if you aren't gonna use it to get a giant hog

At this point, if he wants to get richer and more powerful, running Amazon probably isn't worth his time. It could be that he'll be devoting more time to philanthropy, like Bill Gates (whose net worth today is more than twice what it was when he left Microsoft).
