"This film is riveting in its attention to the details of a prison escape and to the relations between the men involved. And even if you're not interested in the Marxist vision that inspires Becker in this last film of his, you will still be captivated by the story. "
You had me at marxist vision. Alright, I'm going in....will report back.
edit: obligatory https://yts.mx/movies/le-trou-1960, the subs sre on subscene.
Great prison movie. A thinly veiled critique of the inevitable betrayal of the working classes by the bourgeoisie. The details of the prison break aren't skipped over. Building tunnels and chipping though cement with parts of a bedframe takes a long time. Just a totally different film experience if you don't watch old movies.
FYI yts.mx has a great search interface if you're looking for an easy to browses list of all-time-classics, ready to download. I did a blank search, just filling in the genre (crime), then the language (french), with the results ordered by rating (imdb), and this was on the second page of results, and it mentioned marxist in the reviews.
