probably something like caves of qud or dwarf fortress where procedural generation and open ended mechanics of it just leads to wild shit, like a gang of psychic crocodiles that worship a pair of blue sandals murdering you with lazer beams... but in a good way, yknow?

Qud whips. I haven't dared ask the gorilla mayor why he's a gorilla mayor because that just sounds wildly rude.

I keep wanting to make a character that actually makes sense as a tinker so I can make incredible dosh building rifles out of shit I found on the ground but sacking so many skill points to abilities that don't directly prevent my death seems to cause problems.

take any existing set up you like, have 18 int at the beginning, sink a free point into it at some point when youre moderately comfortable at stabbing things to death or whatever and then the skill points into tinker skills. bam, you can now tinker.

tinker 3 is almost never worth it, but you can get to 24 int easy by mid game if you start out with 18

super easy to do with a multiarm shortsword/pistols build for instance, which absolutely dominates from start to finish

that's a good call, I have not fucked with shortsword builds to a sufficient degree

they are blenders of death and destruction.

wristblade-shortsword-stopsvaalin-longsword build slaps too. skillpoint heavy, but if youre running true kin you have points to burn, and with charge-lunge in defensive stance with offhand shortsword and wristblade pumping out multiple attacks and your shield auto-slamming whenever you charge... enemies go splat
