they're not bad, they're just so damn mediocre
none of the levels are memorable, they're just a series of easy as shit segments grouped together
the game is super easy, aside from a few really hard parts that are only hard because they have some annoying gimmick associated with them - motion controls, comets etc.
and making you beat the game twice to see the real ending is an actual war crime

i can tell you 10 levels from both games from where im standing. maybe it's cos i grew up with it but it's made to be memorable.

I agree with you. The games are gorgeous, but I can't bring myself to slog through the boring parts when I could be playing a different game
I thought Galaxy was okay, but it's no Super Mario 64. Out of all the 3D Marios I've played and beaten (64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey), it's my least favorite. But it also gave me something to do with my hands while I went through the Citations Needed back catalog, so that's something. I now have a lot of weird associations like Mike Rowe with the main bee level or John Stossel with that one expanse of disappearing platforms where you have to collect a bunch of coins or something.
One thing that occurred to me that separates Galaxy from those other three is the lack of verticality, which greatly limits the expressiveness of your movement. One of the reasons SM64 still holds up today (in spite of the wonky camera) and why Odyssey is so much fun is how many different ways there are to get from point A to point B. Depending on your skill level, there's all kinds of wacky stuff you can do to try to speed through the levels. In Galaxy, both due to the micro design of small planets and the macro design of linear levels, there's just not much actual platforming to be done most of the time. I seem to recall a lot of time spent just standing around waggling my Wiimote to collect those damn star bits.
Pathologic makes you bet the game three times, and it's the best game that has ever existed.
