Also ham radios and shooting guns seem like fun hobbies, I wish these people would just admit to themselves that they're just taking up a hobby without having to spin some grand narrative about the apocalypse. I guess it's one of the pathologies of American society that it's almost taboo to enjoy your time off, so any activity must somehow be justified. You're not just taking up a few hobbies that are not atypical for men your age, you're preparing for doomsday.

I mean I know they've convinced themselves this is truly what they're doing, and the stockpile of food that without prior thought to how it would get consumed is evidence of that, but I feel this is a subconscious justification. They're sort of fabricating this fantasy to have some justification for taking up a few hobbies they were interested in.
